Hanchett's July 31, 1864 letter to Governor Miller

Superior Wisconsin

July 31st 1864

His Excellency Gov. S. Miller

Saint Paul Min,

My dear Sir,

Our party leaves tomorrow morning down the North Shore. We have secured an outfit on principles of as much economy as possible and hope to inaugurate the survey in accordance with Executive instructions and I trust satisfactory to the citizens of our State. Should you Sir, find leisure to visit us at any time before Sept. 11th we shall be most happy to extend to you the hospitalities of our camp. After Sept 11th the expedition’s corps will find its way with all diligence to Vermillion Lake, and will not in all probability return before Oct 10th @ 18th.

Any special instructions with which you may choose to honor me will reach me promptly if directed to my address at Duluth Saint Louis Co. Minnesota to Care of Sidney Luce Esq.

I regret having to leave without the Barometer as it did not arrive yesterday, and cannot now reach me except by the mail carrier as he passes (once per week) at our coast line station. Trusting that I may have the pleasure of meeting your Excellency and such others of our citizens as you may honor by your company in a visit to the shore of our great inland sea.

Remain Dear Sir,

Very Respectfully

Your Obt Servt.

Aug. H. Hanchett
