Hanchett's May31, 1864 letter to Governor Miller

Biddle House Detroit Mich.

Tuesday May 31st 1864

His Excellency, S. Miller,

Saint Paul Minn.

Sir,

I learn today by advice from the Hon. Edmund Rice that my acceptance of the appointment as Geologist to the Northern portion of your State has not been received at the Executive office.

Permit me to state that the official announcement of the appointment under date of March 5th I had the pleasure of receiving on the 19th of the same month, and had the honor on that date of acknowledging, and accepting the same by mail.

Pressing personal engagements have unexpectedly delayed aporting myself at the Capital as early as I have desired, but shall endeavor to do so on, or before the 5th Prox. ready for duty.

I am Sir,

Your Excellencies

Obt. Servt.

Aug. H. Hanchett

The Biddle House was once Detroit's most luxurious hotel with 500 rooms. It was demolished in 1917.
